Children’s Fairyland in Oakland is receiving a $5 million state investment to ensure the nearly 80-year-old storybook park can preserve its magic for generations to come.

For generations of Bay Area families, Children’s Fairyland has been a place where fairy tales, play, and imagination come to life. The funding comes directly from the state budget and completes the first phase of the park’s long-term capital plan.

“This is such an iconic piece of Oakland,” said Kymberly Miller, CEO of Children’s Fairyland. “It is a huge part of what being an Oaklander is and an East Bay icon, so this is real for us. It is giving us what we need to make the future.”

Of the total funding, $2 million will support operations, while another $3 million will fund restoration and upgrades, including replacing 100-year-old pipes.

“A foundational beginning,” Miller said. “We have a long way to go, we have to improve the physical space of the park, which means maintenance of sets, maybe some new buildings so we can have indoor programming during the winter.”

Fairyland celebrated 75 years in Oakland last year. Its storybook world made it a pioneer in children’s entertainment, though the park has also weathered major challenges, including the pandemic.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee emphasized that the investment ensures families will continue having a place to play and make memories.

“It’s vital funding that we need right here in Oakland,” Mayor Lee said, adding, “It’s really a storybook that comes to life. And so regardless of how old you are or how young you are, my family can attest to the fact. This is a dream come true.”

In a statement, Assemblymember Mia Bonta said she is proud to deliver real funding wins that preserve the artistic and cultural legacy of Oakland.

Miller noted that the support represents a broader endorsement of the park’s mission: “I think our local leaders and Governor Newsom have given Fairyland a vote of confidence. The time is now to come close to Fairyland, get involved whether it is volunteering your time or energy or your treasure to make sure we last the next 76 years.”
