Family and friends gathered to honor Ingold Guttenbeil, who was fatally shot by Sacramento County deputies, as his loved ones shared memories and expressed their grief.
Family and friends came together for a vigil to honor Ingold Guttenbeil, who was fatally shot by Sacramento County deputies Sunday morning.
His wife, Jasmine Guttenbeil-Ingold, shared her sorrow, saying, “I know that everybody is going to leave and go home to their families, but me and my kids are going to mourn for the rest of our lives until it’s our time to go.”
Reflecting on her husband’s memory, she said, “I’m going to miss his laugh and his annoyance and I’m going to miss reading the Bible with him.”
Guttenbeil was shot and killed after deputies responded to reports of a man asleep in a car wash parking lot with a handgun in his lap.
The sheriff’s office stated that Guttenbeil allegedly fired his gun at a couple the night before at the same intersection. Deputies repeatedly commanded him to put his hands up and walk backward toward them. According to the sheriff’s office, he failed to comply and turned toward deputies while reaching down, prompting three deputies to open fire.
Jasmine Guttenbeil-Ingold expressed frustration with the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.
“I don’t think he should’ve died the way that he did…I don’t,” she said. She also questioned the deputies’ actions, stating, “I don’t think that it should have happened the way that it did, because he was pulling his pants up. So you can’t just shoot somebody because they’re pulling their pants up.”
When asked if she had a message for the sheriff’s office, she said, “My only message to them is they don’t have to answer to me, but they will have to answer to the God of Israel, and God is going to have the final judgment on that.”
Guttenbeil’s sister, Adele Guttenbeil, also spoke at the vigil, calling for justice.
“I want the sac sheriff’s department to know justice will prevail, and my brother will get justice because we wrongfully killed here and you see his value over here. You see the community come out for him,” she said.
