LONG BEACH — The Long Beach Poly girls flag football team scored 25 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for a 31-6 win over visiting Millikan on Monday night to secure its fourth consecutive Moore League title.
The game’s start was pushed back to 7:15 p.m. due to the extreme heat.
Poly senior quarterback Kenzie Paimany, who missed her junior season because of an ACL injury, threw three touchdown passes and one interception.
“We kind of dominated in that second half and I’m really proud that we connected on all of our passes and we got to that end zone,” Paimany said.
Jackrabbits sophomore receiver Neveah Johnson, who also plays quarterback and defensive back, had two touchdowns.
She had a 25-yard touchdown catch that put Poly up 6-0 with 7:55 left in the second quarter. Johnson, who briefly played quarterback in the second half, also had a 29-yard touchdown run that extended Poly’s lead to 25-6 early in the fourth quarter.
“I feel like we’re really coming together and playing together as a team,” Johnson said. “I feel like our chemistry is really there.”
Poly improved to 8-8 overall and 6-0 in the Moore League. It clinched the league title outright because the league’s other four teams each have at least three losses with a maximum of two league games remaining.
“That’s the biggest thing that I love is that they celebrate and they play for each other,” Long Beach Poly coach Rob Shock said.
The Jackrabbits, who began the season on a six-game losing streak, will conclude league play against Lakewood on Wednesday and Jordan on Oct. 14.
Millikan (11-6, 4-3) was led by sophomore receiver Penelope Cleven, who hauled in a leaping 29-yard touchdown catch to tie the game at 6 with less than 30 seconds to go in the first half.
Cleven, who also plays defensive back, picked off a pass early in the first quarter.
The Rams, who will conclude league play against Jordan on Monday, Oct. 12, switched to a faster tempo on their opening possession of the first half but went three-and-out and punted.
Senior receiver Makayla Lumpkin’s 45-yard catch-and-run touchdown put Poly up 12-6 with 8:02 left in the third quarter.
Paimany’s 15-yard touchdown pass over the middle to senior receiver Julie Lopez made it 18-6 late in the third.
Johnson’s long touchdown run pushed it to 25-6 with 9:42 remaining. Senior defensive back Brooklyn Richardson’s interception two minutes later shut the door on Millikan’s comeback hopes.
Sophomore receiver Amai’a Johnson’s 9-yard touchdown run made it 31-6 with 4:40 to go.
Paimany believes Poly’s program is in good hands with the team’s emerging playmakers.
“As an upperclassman, it’s just good to get my underclassmen going because when I leave, they’re going to keep our reputation going as Long Beach Poly,” Paimany said. “We’re undefeated in Moore League right now, so I hope they can keep that going as the years go on.”
