October is one of the best months in Oakland because of the endless events happening all over town. If you’re a sneaker head, you’re in luck. If you love pizza and hip-hop, there’s a listening party made for you. And if you care about the history of Oakland, there’s a new permanent exhibit in East Oakland worth checking out.
Have an event you’d like to see included here? We do our best to stay on top of what’s happening in our community, but we love a tip. Send us a note at azucena@oaklandside.org. You can also use the self-submission form on our events page to add it to our calendar for free.

‘Indigenous Voices’ exhibit at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park
The Fruitvale park is known for preserving the controversial history of the Peralta family, descendants of the last Spanish governor of Alta California, Pablo Vicente de Solá. But the nonprofit that runs the park has also long emphasized the telling of the history of the Ohlone people who occupied the land long before the Peraltas. Now, a new permanent installation will further preserve and interpret Ohlone history. For the past three years, Ohlone artists, culture bearers, historians and designers have been shaping the installation, which features a new sculpture by the landscape artist Walter Hood, a MacArthur fellow; a 100-foot-long bench painted with images of the traditional textiles Fruitvale families brought from their own cultures, and basketweaver Linda Yamane’s Ohlone Basketry Garden. The Oct. 10 grand opening will feature a screening of the short “Who Did the Work?,” a doc by Rick Tejada Flores that explores forced labor during the colonial period.
Saturday, Oct. 10, 12 to 3 p.m., free, Peralta Hacienda, 2465 34th Ave.
