SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Wyoming Cowgirls secured their first Mountain West victory of the season Saturday, rolling past San Jose State in a convincing straight-set road sweep (25-23, 25-20, 25-18).
Coming off a loss to the Spartans on Thursday, Wyoming (8-7, 1-3 MW) rebounded with a poised late-game execution in set one. A tight battle ended with the Cowgirls outscoring San Jose State 4-2 down the stretch to claim the opening set.
Wyoming carried that momentum into the second frame. Tied at 9-9, the Cowgirls used a pivotal 6-1 run to pull ahead 16-10, taking firm control of the set. The third set saw Wyoming take over early, breaking a 6-6 tie to build a commanding 15-8 lead. Although San Jose State briefly cut the margin to three late in the set, the Cowgirls slammed the door shut by scoring the final four points to complete the sweep.
Efficiency on offense and disciplined serving proved to be the difference maker. Wyoming outhit San Jose State .327 to .227 and kept the pressure on behind the line. While the Spartans held a slight 8-7 advantage in service aces, Wyoming committed only seven serving errors compared to San Jose State’s 11. Both teams recorded five blocks.
Peyton Carruth set the pace at the service line, tying her career high with four aces while adding eight digs. Addy Thorington chipped in two aces and three blocks, and Ann Melgren added another ace.
Paige Lauterwasser led the attack with 13 kills while hitting .370. Rylee Heinz and Emma Winter delivered efficient performances, adding eight kills each with hitting percentages of .467 and .412, respectively. Heinz also anchored the defense with a team-high four block assists.
In the backcourt, Maddy Stucky notched her second double-double of the season, leading the team with 12 digs to go along with 12 assists. Setter Sara Quigley guided the offense with a team-high 18 assists.
Up Next: The Cowgirls return to action next week for a split series against Air Force. Wyoming will host the Falcons on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. at the UniWyo Center before traveling to Colorado Springs for a rematch on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m.
