POMONA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men’s water polo squad wrapped up a busy three days in the pool with a solid showing against a Top 10 ranked team and a solid victory against a familiar opponent to close out the Gary Troyer Tournament.

No. 7 Long Beach State 16, No. 20 Concordia 12

Levi Riegelmann scored five times and Hugo Wouters added a goal and two assists to pace the CUI offense.

Wes Brazda and Joao Concalves each contributed a goal and two assists as well.

Sophomore goalie Derek Maddox came up with seven saves. He and the Golden Eagles were tied 7-7 with the No. 7 team in the country at intermission.  But Long Beach State outscored CUI 9-5 in the second half to secure the victory.

No. 20 Concordia 17, Cal Lutheran 13

The Green and Gold bounced back in a big way in a rematch with Cal Lutheran for their final game of the tournament.

Hugo Wouters was a force to be reckoned with and racked up eight goals and an assist. Joao Goncalves also served up a team-high four assists and a tally of his own.

Maddox again was in the cage for the whole game and was credited with nine saves against the Kingsmen.

Concordia rattled off seven consecutive goals from the midway point in the second period to the 3:13 mark in the third period. That boost gave the Golden Eagles all they needed.

Next up for the Golden Eagles is a date with UC Merced up north on Friday, Oct. 9th. Concordia will be back home in a few weeks on Friday, Oct. 23 against LMU.
