MODESTO, Calif. —
A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Modesto on Monday, according to police.
The Modesto Police Department said a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle around 4 p.m. near Needham Street and McHenry Avenue.
Police said a white Chevrolet Silverado was driving on Needham Street and entered an alley west of McHenry Avenue. As the vehicle was going through the alley, it collided with a 63-year-old bicyclist who was traveling westbound on Alice Street.
The driver fled the scene following the crash, police said.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity will not be released until his next of kin is notified.
Investigators identified the vehicle and later found it driving in Modesto. Officers pulled the vehicle over near 9th and M streets and contacted the driver, who was identified as 33-year-old Manuel Cerrillo-Mendoza.
Police said Cerrillo-Mendoza was allegedly driving under the influence. Officers also found that he had a DUI-related history.
Cerrillo-Mendoza was arrested and booked into jail on murder and DUI charges, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
Police said the hit-and-run is the city’s 10th fatal traffic collision this year.
