SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco transit officials are designating geofenced boundaries to limit autonomous taxi activity in and around Fleet Week this weekend. The San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency has posted detailed guidance around the areas where Waymos won’t be permitted to operate.

The designated boundaries are to “help avoid traffic congestion and maintain pedestrian safety near the waterfront,” SFMTA said. Transit officials’ limiting of autonomous activity around Fleet Week comes in the wake of a number of high-profile traffic meltdowns involving Waymos and big public events in the city, most notably, the July 4th fireworks at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Traditional human-driven rideshare services like Lyft and Uber will be allowed to operate as normal.

Despite Waymos wreaking havoc on traffic during the 4th of July, subsequent major events in SF, like Outside Lands and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, have been relatively free of trouble related to the autonomous vehicles.

City officials are strongly urging Fleet Week attendees to use public transit. BART, SF Bay Ferry and Muni will all be providing extra service this weekend.
