A 28-year-old San Francisco man is accused of running a red light and crashing into another vehicle in Daly City last weekend, killing two people, San Mateo County prosecutors said Thursday.
Alvaro Caballero Arteaga made his initial appearance in court Wednesday to face charges for a crash reported on Sunday at the intersection of San Jose Avenue and Flournoy Street, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Caballero Arteaga allegedly sped through a red light and broadsided another vehicle, killing the driver Rhiannon Lawler and passenger Agustin Garcia, prosecutors said.
A preliminary alcohol screening showed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.15%, and investigators learned his driver’s license had been suspended following an arrest in February in Alameda County for misdemeanor drunk driving, according to the district attorney’s office.
Caballero Arteaga did not enter a plea at his arraignment Wednesday and was assigned an attorney via the county’s Private Defender Program. He will return to court on Oct. 15 for further arraignment and remains in custody on “no bail” status, prosecutors said.
