FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The federal government has been closed for more than 40 days now — leaving some local organizations in limbo.

Fresno Housing, which serves nearly 50,000 people in the county, says next year’s budget is on pause.

“About 80% of our budget at Fresno housing comes from the federal government,” Fresno Housing CEO Tyrone Roderick Williams stated. “They’ve not approved the budget for HUD and that’s where we get our resources.”

That funding covers a variety of programs, including building new affordable homes.

“The shutdown really kicked the can down the road as far as us being able to know how much funding we’re going to be able to receive to operate not only a housing choice voucher program but the programs relating to the public housing as well,” Williams explained.

Fresno Housing says it does not know when the budget could be approved or what the funding levels will be.

“The last thing we want is to get an approved budget and then have to cut back on the services we provide because of budget limitations,” Williams said.

In the meantime, those who rely on Fresno Housing’s choice voucher program may not be feeling an impact just yet.

“As a precursor to the shutdown, HUD had allocated funding that covered us through November and December,” Williams stated.

Across town, Poverello House is also feeling the pinch — footing the bill for several of its programs.

“One of them is a rental support program and not really knowing when we could be reimbursed for those dollars going out,” Poverello House CEO Zack Darrah explained.

The nonprofit says it’s having to front-load tens of thousands of dollars each month for those programs.
