FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Local fallen heroes were remembered and celebrated at the 21st Annual Hubbard-Baro Memorial Golf Tournament on Tuesday.

The fundraiser is held every Veteran’s Day in honor of 10 service members from the Fresno area who gave their lives for their country.

“To remember is the whole point of it. Never to forget what freedom costs,” said Terry Baro. Her son, Marine Corporal Jeremiah Baro, was killed in action on August 22, 2007 in Multaka, Iraq. He was 22 years old.

A pair of brothers, 22-year-old Lance Corporal Jared Hubbard and 21-year-old Corporal Nathan Hubbard, were also among those honored.

All three young men were alumni of Buchanan High School, which has lost a total of eight of its graduates that were killed in the line of duty.

“It’s a sacrifice. And everybody says, you know, thank you for your sacrifice. But honestly, it’s my little boy. You know? He was a marine, yes, but it’s the little boy that, you know, I pushed on a bicycle and taught him on his training wheels and got through his first breakup with his girlfriend… but there’s a life. There’s a life there,” said Terry Barro.

Hundreds of friends and family of the fallen, as well as veterans showed up Tuesday in support of the tournament.

After a brief ceremony, teams of golfers played at the Fort Washington Country Club to raise money for Fresno’s V.A.

Organizers said that since the tournament’s inception over 20 years ago, it has raised over a million dollars to support veterans.
