Voters in the California’s 67th Assembly District don’t have to think very hard about who to represent them.
The district, currently represented by Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva, spans portions of Los Angeles County and Orange County, and includes the cities of Anaheim, Cerritos and Fullerton. With Quirk-Silva term-limited, it’s an open seat with only one serious candidate running.
Born and raised in Cerritos, Mark Pulido and has served in various in public service roles in and around the community going back decades. Currently a member of the Cerritos City Council, he previously served on the ABC Unified School District from 2001 to 2011. He has also worked as a staffer or consultant to lawmakers in the Legislature and worked as deputy chief of staff for former Representative Alan Lowenthal.
“Life is short and I want to give back,” he told us. A Filipino-American, Pulido’s father worked as an engineer for CalTrans before becoming a successful real estate broker. This background no doubt laid a foundation for Pulido’s pro-housing bent, with an eye toward supply side solutions. While he notes the importance of being respectful of community input, he ultimately recognizes the need for pro-housing policies like Senate Bill 79 to break the logjam and get more housing built.
While are sure to disagree with him on many issues, he at least gave a nod to the importance of having a “strong and vibrant business community” and casts himself as a “pragmatic problem solver willing to listen.” It’s that positioning that helped him eke out a primary win over fellow Democrat Ada Briceño, who is best known as a leader of the odious Unite Here Local 11. We appreciate Pulido sparing the Legislature, and by extension all of the California, the bad bills that would’ve come from an Assemblymember Briceño.
By contrast, we have no idea, really, what his Republican opponent Paulo Morales thinks. He ignored multiple invitations from the editorial board. He is a former mayor and councilman in the city of Cypress, and his endorsement list consists solely of endorsements from his colleagues there. What we do know is that Cerritos is in better fiscal shape than Cypress, based on California Policy Center’s Local Fiscal Health Dashboard.
This is an easy call. Vote for Mark Pulido in the 67th Assembly District.
