PONTIAC, Mich. — Oakland County sheriff’s deputies and local children took to the basketball court for the second annual Cops vs. Kids game at the UWM Sports Complex in Pontiac.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Police Athletic League (PAL) hosted the event, bringing young people and law enforcement officers together through sports and community engagement on Friday (Oct. 9).
Former NBA and Michigan State Spartans basketball player Greg Keiser helped kick off the event.
Organizers said the game is designed to build relationships between children and law enforcement while helping young people see officers as people they can trust.
“By reaching out through sports, for example, it allows them to collaborate with law enforcement to let them know that we are not the bad guys, that we are human, and that we are here to help them,” Oakland County police Deputy Morris Cotton said.
The Sheriff’s PAL program provides sports, mentoring, and enrichment opportunities for local children, aiming to encourage positive relationships between young people and law enforcement.
