Anaheim Ducks News & Notes

Anaheim handed Winnipeg its first regulation loss of the season Friday night, winning 5-1 at Canada Life Centre behind an unusual night from its fourth line. Jeff Malott, a former Manitoba Moose forward, picked up two assists, while linemates Judd Caulfield and Tim Washe each had a goal and an assist. Caulfield’s first NHL goal, jammed home at 14:41 of the first period in his fourth career game, opened the scoring with roughly 10 family members in the stands.

Joel Quenneville said the line scored a couple off the rush and nearly added a third, with strong cycle shifts in the third period. The win followed Anaheim’s first loss of the season, a 5-2 defeat to Edmonton in which the Ducks outshot the Oilers 31-19 and went 2-for-7 on the power play. Leo Carlsson, who leads the team in scoring after the Ducks matched Philadelphia’s five-year, $90 million offer sheet, assisted on both Beckett Sennecke goals in that game.

Calgary Flames News & Notes

Calgary reshaped its blue line over the summer, acquiring defenseman Simon Nemec and forward Maxim Tsyplakov from New Jersey in a June 23 trade that cost the Flames two top-10 protected first-round picks — Vegas’ 2027 selection and Colorado’s 2028 — plus the 35th overall pick in 2026 and defense prospect Etienne Morin. Nemec posted 26 points in 68 games last season and blocked 104 shots. The Flames also added defenseman Jake Middleton in their offseason retooling.

The early schedule has already brought roster churn. Calgary assigned forward Connor Zary and defenseman Brayden Pachal to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers earlier this week, days after the club announced its 2026-27 opening night roster. The Flames hosted Colorado on Oct. 8 at the Scotiabank Saddledome and lost after a strong start to the game. Calgary opened the season on the road, visiting Vancouver on Oct. 3.

Players To Watch

Beckett Sennecke — Anaheim Ducks

Sennecke set up both of Anaheim’s early goals with two assists in 17:03 last time out despite not registering a shot. Box Score Junkie has him at a 60.3% Corsi-for and 61.6% Fenwick through the 2026-27 season to date, with 67.6 shot attempts for per 60 and three goals on 1.8 expected. Play driver and finisher.

Mikael Backlund — Calgary Flames

Backlund fired eight shots in 17:41 last game and buried one of them, far and away Calgary’s busiest shooter on the night. If that volume carries over, he’s a sensible look on shots-on-goal props, and he’s a reasonable cheap fantasy play with Jonathan Huberdeau on injured reserve.
