MODESTO, Calif. —
A car crashed into a home Thursday morning, killing a woman, injuring three others, and leaving the homeowner facing significant challenges as she works to rebuild her life.
Gennifer Folks, the homeowner, said she is starting to pick up the pieces after the crash.
“It didn’t sound like a sonic boom, but it was a huge boom,” Folks said.
She explained that her roommate, 67-year-old Kathleen Erickson, was asleep in the room where the car came through and was thrown through the kitchen wall during the impact. Police said Erickson was transported to the hospital, where she died later that day.
“Right now I don’t know what to do. I lost a best friend, you know, and that’s it,” Folks said.
Folks said she has lived in the house for the last 10 years and was one roofing project away from being able to insure it. She is now trying to figure out where to start with rebuilding.
“This is my first time back. I left at night with a flashlight because I was trying to make a path for myself to get to the safest part of the house, and that’s just where I’m at right now,” she said.
She added that she is working to find a place for her six cats and two dogs to stay.
Police said the driver of the car suffered a medical emergency that led to the crash. The driver, an adult female passenger, and a 12-year-old in the vehicle were all taken to the hospital. Their conditions have not been released.
