More information is surfacing about the incident in Fresno’s Tower District that resulted in an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent being shot after allegedly attacking a homeowner early Friday.

Frederick Lisitsa, a man identifying himself as a neighbor of the unnamed homeowner, took to social media and called the man a “hero for defending himself and his daughter.”

Lisitsa said he lives across the street from the home in question, near Broadway and Dudley avenues. He said the agent — David Gonzalez, 32, of Texas — was “belligerently drunk” and wearing a wristband from one of the nearby establishments at the time of the altercation.

“It has nothing to do with him being an ICE agent and has everything to do with him being an ICE agent. At first, it just presents as a man being drunk. But, probably, a random drunk on the road wouldn’t have gotten up and attacked them,” Lisitsa said.

Lisitsa said Gonzalez was trying to open random car door handles down the street before passing out on the homeowner’s front lawn.

The Fresno Police Department said in a press release that, after Gonzalez was woken up and confronted by the 72-year-old homeowner, Gonzalez attacked him. After the homeowner’s daughter intervened, authorities say Gonzalez attacked her. The homeowner then shot Gonzalez in the midsection, police said.

“He attacked them. He attacked them to the point where there are dents on my car because the fight extended all the way out into the street,” Lisitsa said of the altercation.

In response to the incident, several city leaders spoke out against ICE enforcement in the Fresno area.

“There are serious questions about the screening, qualifications, psychological fitness, and accountability of the out-of-state ICE officers being deployed into our neighborhoods,” Fresno councilmember Miguel Arias said on social media.

Spokespeople for ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not comment on the incident and referred any questions to the Fresno Police Department.

There have been no updates shared about Gonzalez’s condition or any charges filed against him.
