Two school districts in northern Oakland County have had to cancel classes today, Tuesday, Oct. 13, after a key fiber optic cable along Lapeer Road was cut on Monday.

Lake Orion Community Schools and the Oxford School District announced the closures on their websites. Officials had hoped it would be repaired in time for Tuesday’s classes but with the repairs not completed this morning, classes were called off.

Students will be able to enjoy a possible last glimpse of summer weather today, as highs are expected to be in the lower-to-mid 80s. Later in the week, on Friday and Saturday, the weather will be more seasonal, as the high temperatures will only reach into the lower 50s or upper 40s.

Here is the Lake Orion schools’ message to students and families:

“Due to the fiber cut on M-24 and the loss of internet access, LOCS will be closed on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. As shared in the Monday night message, the district was hoping for an overnight restoration to allow us to have internet for the essential daily systems.

“But, despite the vendor attempting a repair, the project would not be done in time for an operational day for LOCS students and staff. Thank you for understanding and we will share more details about restoration as they become available.”

Oxford schools’ message:

“Oxford Community Schools is closed today, Tuesday, October 13, 2026, due to damage to the fiber optic cable serving the district. This damage has disrupted several essential district systems, affecting our ability to operate schools. We anticipate that repairs will be completed today, but not in time for school to be held as scheduled.

“Information and updates about afterschool and evening activities will be shared on social media and posted to our district website. Thank you for your understanding.”
