FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A woman was arrested on Friday in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a 78-year-old man.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. on September 13th at McKinley and Normal Avenues.

When officers arrived, they found a pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway.

Despite lifesaving efforts by officers, emergency medical services and fire personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives determined the man had been pushing a cart across McKinley Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound.

Detectives used an Automated License Plate Reader to identify a possible suspect vehicle.

Officers later found the vehicle abandoned in the neighborhood northeast of the crash scene.

The vehicle had been covered with tarps and secured with rocks taken from a neighboring residence, police said.

Investigators said the vehicle had physical evidence and a damage profile consistent with striking a pedestrian, and it was impounded as evidence.

Detectives positively identified 30-year-old Mariah Irion as the suspect responsible for the collision.

Police arrested Irion Friday at a residence near East Lamona Avenue and North Bond Street.

She was booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing death, vehicular manslaughter, and driving on a suspended driver’s license.
