Bass has touted progress on Los Angeles’ homelessness crisis. Here’s what she said earlier in her campaign.

“We know how to get people off the street,” the incumbent said during a forum in South Los Angeles on Oct. 3. “This system is completely dysfunctional, and we need a new system that is under the control of the city because the worst part of the situation with people who are unhoused is the care they get once they leave the streets.

“It is insufficient. They are not taken care of in terms of their health, education, et cetera. A new system would enable us to do that. That has been a weakness because services are provided by the county, not the city. It’s a mess. That mess needs to change.”

Both incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and challenger Nithya Raman were out making their case to voters this weekend. Tracey Leong reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026.
