LONG BEACH — Scott Daniels produced a hat trick and the Wilson boys water polo team scored seven second-half goals to pull away for an 11-5 victory over Long Beach Poly in the Moore League on Tuesday at the Wilson Aquatics Center.
Wilson (16-8, 4-0) is now alone in first place and can win the league title outright next week when it faces Lakewood on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
“It’s nice to have a good lefty,” Bruins coach Zac Polmanteer said of Daniels.
Wilson also got two-goal efforts from Jackson Roci, Evin Vanacuval and Chi Kredall. Goalkeeper Jack Cassiano had eight saves.
Vanacuval’s skip shot off the water as time expired gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead at halftime.
“I’m proud of the guys for sticking to the game plan — the counter attack, making sure they were spaced out,” Polmanteer said.
Poly (11-14, 4-1) was unable to take advantage of a strong start. The Jackrabbits led 2-1 after one quarter and 3-2 after Rene Ortega’s goal with 5:01 left in the second quarter.
There was also a missed opportunity by Long Beach Poly on an errant penalty shot with two minutes left in the half.
Poly produced the first goal after halftime to tie the contest 4-4 before Wilson took control with strong defense that turned into transition opportunities.
Jackrabbits coach Ishmael Pluton said his team was able to draw early one-man advantages, drawing three first-quarter ejections to create scoring opportunities.
“Our game plan going into the game was to have a high-movement offense,” Pluton said, “and our goal was to earn ejections, to earn the man-up opportunities. So we were doing exactly what our game plan was and it was working really well.
“Wilson put pressure on key players (in the third quarter), positions that we threw a pass that wasn’t a quality pass. Turned it into a 50-50 ball that Wilson won.”
Poly went more than five minutes between goals in the third quarter.
The Jackrabbits got three goals from Ortega and two from Benjamin Rocha. Goalkeeper Marrik Salas made nine saves.
“(Ortega) kind of finds himself and he’s really smart in these moments and clutch games like this one and the Millikan game,” Pluton said. “He’ll step into a shooting pocket and find the back of the net from outside. We saw that today, that last goal was beautiful.”
Wilson started to pull away after back-to-back goals from Kredall made it 6-4 early in the third.
The Bruins took a 9-5 lead into the fourth on a high-arcing shot from Enzo Horiuchi to beat the third-quarter horn.
“I felt like we had a lot of good, clear passing lanes,” Polmanteer said of the difference in the second half. “I think we did a really good job of switching and conversing (on defense). I think the talking was good and everybody was staying calm and there were no overreactions.”
