SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing kayaker near Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla, California, at approximately 6:20 p.m., Tuesday.
At 6:00 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego received notification that 27-year-old Samantha Youngs was missing, along with her kayak.
Her family reported her missing after Youngs’ car was found at the Torrey Pines Gliderport cliffside parking lot.
“After exhausting all reasonable search efforts, we have made the difficult decision to suspend active search operations,” said Cmdr. Celina Ladyga, acting commanding officer, Sector San Diego. “Our thoughts remain with the missing individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Coast Guard crews from Station San Diego, Air Station Ventura and Coast Guard Cutter Haddock searched the waters near Torrey Pines Natural Reserve and La Jolla shores, for a total of 484 square miles and more than 11 combined hours. Members of the San Diego Lifeguard Service and the San Diego Police Department also assisted in the search.
