BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — On Veterans Day, Kern County pulled out all the stops in honor of those who have protected our community.
Between marching bands, floats and antique cars, the Kern County community came together for an honorable celebration of one the bravest in our community, which was emceed by 17’s very own Jim Scott.
“They deserve more than what we’re even doing now. They’ve given us so much, they’ve done so much for our country…they deserve more. So, I really appreciate what they do,” said Becky Cummings, of Honor Flight.
“Oh, it’s wonderful,” said Kathy Rassmussen, of Kern County Cattlewomen. “We love celebrating the Veterans and just all the camaraderie on the horses.”
For many here in Kern County, Veterans Day is personal.
“So this is my cousin, Ben. He was in the Marines in Vietnam. My dad, his picture is on the other side,” said Ruth Mora.
Mora and the Bakersfield Eagles are proud to display photos of family members who have served.
For those in the crowd who have served themselves — the parade is even better.

“Just everybody who’s enjoying the fact that we’re honoring us Veterans, that’s about the best part of it,” said Patrick Schmitt, a Vietnam Navy Veteran.
Luis and Nathan Ramirez, a father and son Army duo, are proud to be celebrating Veterans Day together.
“It feels too good to be here and so good to be with the people…just to say hi,” said Luis.
“It means lot. You know, following my father’s footsteps, it means a lot to me,” said Nathan. “It’s always been my dream to serve my country and finally getting the honor to do it has been amazing, but without vets like him and other vets before my time, I wouldn’t have been able to have the chance to serve as well.”
The Kern County Nurse’s Honor Guard also attended the parade to pay tribute to our community’s Veterans, along with the nurses and medical professionals who have helped them.
“For us…I think it means everything, right? Yeah, we just, feel so honored to be apart of the patriotism the Veterans. We honor our Veterans every opportunity we can and we try to participate in as many civic opportunities as we can, so that people know we have a free service, and it’s a it’s a tribute to the nurses,” said Karen Coughenour.
Another year of celebration, remembrance and profound respect has taken place for those who have served in Kern County.
