COVINA, Calif. (KABC) — Another sinkhole opened up overnight in Covina, less than 24 hours after a separate massive sinkhole nearly swallowed a van in Los Angeles County.

The new sinkhole is located on San Bernardino Road near North Elspeth Way. Video shows a large opening and cracks that formed along the street.

Eyewitness News reached out to city officials to find out if that sinkhole was potentially the result of a water main break.

That’s what happened on a residential street in Los Feliz on Wednesday.

A massive sinkhole opened up Wednesday morning on a residential street in Los Feliz, nearly swallowing a van.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said the much larger sinkhole formed after an 8-inch water main failed. The utility said 31 homes were affected by the break.

That sinkhole formed near the intersection of Franklin and Normandie avenues, where a Spectrum cable company van became partially submerged as the street gave way.

Witnesses described watching the collapse unfold in real time.

“We were standing out here. We watched this van go down. It was just to the fender and watched it sink, all the rocks coming up and it was just unbelievable,” said Gayle, a nearby resident.

Gayle said water had been gushing down the street before the sinkhole opened and recalled seeing the Spectrum technician flee the area.

“He ran for his life across the street and put it that way it was just. I felt so bad for him. I still feel bad for him,” she said.

Spectrum said in a statement that its employee was not injured.

Crews remained at the scene throughout the night to repair the damage.
