Irvine-based Rivian Automotive is expanding its recent partnership with energy technology company Redwood Materials, which initially launched in April to power the automaker’s manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois with second-life battery packs.
Redwood, founded in 2017, will start recycling battery scrap generated at Rivian’s manufacturing operations along with the battery packs from decommissioned electric vehicles.
“Giving Rivian battery packs a second life in stationary storage is a massive unlock for the energy transition,” Rivian (Nasdaq: RIVN) Founder and Chief Executive RJ Scaringe said in a statement. “By partnering with JB and the Redwood team, we’re turning retired EV batteries into a powerful tool to make the grid more reliable and lower energy costs for everyone.”
