Last year, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors declared that the holdings in the county reserve fund were excessive. Members proceeded to raid the reserves for a non-emergency action — providing bonuses to county employees.

Now, they are identifying several areas for emergency funding, such as Tijuana River Valley pollution, and feeding and health services that were stripped from the federal budget. Their proposed solution is to collect an additional half-cent sales tax from the public.

It reminds me of the story of a youth who kills both his parents and then asks the court for mercy because he is an orphan. Call it audacity. Call it hubris. Call it what it is — abuse of the critical county reserves fund, followed by a cry to the public to raise funds for an emergency that should be funded from the reserves.

Support for Measure B can’t be justified.
