L.A.’s Broadway district holds a spectacular record.

It features the highest concentration of movie palaces in the entire United States. Despite this, most locals have never actually stepped inside these stunning spaces.

This October, that finally changes. The L.A. Conservancy is unlocking the doors to the historic Million Dollar Theater.

They are offering a rare opportunity to watch classic films like ‘The Shining’ and ‘Clue’.

The birth of a cinema empire

Opened in 1918, this magnificent venue is a cornerstone of local architecture.

It was the very first theater built by Sid Grauman. Before he became famous for the iconic Egyptian and Chinese theaters, Grauman launched his cinematic empire right here on Broadway.

The Million Dollar Theater marked a massive shift in entertainment. According to Adrian Scott Fine, CEO of the L.A. Conservancy, earlier theaters were built for vaudeville and live performances.

Movie palaces were entirely different. They were built on a much grander scale to elevate the brand-new medium of cinema.

More than just a movie

These screenings are about more than what is on the screen.

The conservancy’s film series grants the public regular access to these shuttered architectural landmarks.

Attendees are consistently drawn to the incredible atmosphere and century-old history of the space.

Ready to step back in time? The theater is located at 307 S. Broadway.
