SAN FRANCISCO — Waymo announced Wednesday that its self-driving vehicles have received the green light to offer rides on San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix and Los Angeles freeways.

A select group of riders will have freeway access, before the option expands, Waymo said.

Freeway capabilities will eventually be expanded to Austin, Atlanta and more, the company said.

Some northern California riders can also now book rides from San Francisco to San Jose, including curbside service at San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC).

The expansion creates a 260-square-mile network across the Peninsula.

In September, Waymo also won approval to roll out service at the San Francisco Airport.

“This experience, reinforced by comprehensive testing as well as extensive operational preparation, supports the delivery of a safe and reliable service. We’ve also closely collaborated with safety officials, to seamlessly support this new phase of service,” Waymo said.

Riders must sign up to get access to freeway rides through the Waymo app.
