California public school officials say there was a data breach that included personal information of students who took the state’s mandated standardized tests.
The data breach potentially affects students enrolled in California public schools over the past three years, the California Department of Education said.
Officials said data breach happened on Sept. 25 after a hacker compromised an account to access student records from within the Educational Testing Service (ETS)-operated system, the California Department of Education said.
The hacker copied student records between May 22 and Sept. 18, 2026. Compromised data may include student names, dates of birth, addresses, student IDs, school, district, grade level, disability and Section 504 status, testing accommodations and demographic information, according to officials.
Officials said there was no financial information that was accessed including social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passwords, debit or credit information and parent or guardian personal information.
In a message to families, the Sacramento City Unified School District said there’s no indication that its district systems were compromised.
State officials said affected individuals will begin to be notified on Oct. 16 and expect to continue through early November. ETS is offering a complimentary identity protection service for two years.
