MLB free agency has arrived, and the San Francisco Giants will undoubtedly be in the hunt for a splashy signing this offseason.
While rumors regarding the Giants’ interest in star outfielder Kyle Tucker and free agent starting pitcher Max Scherzer have already made their rounds, another name has entered the fold as a potential target for San Francisco.
Free agent left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez is looking for a new contract this winter, and two of CBS Sports’ panel of writers have predicted that the two-time All-Star will land with the San Francisco Giants.

I toyed with the Mets and the Red Sox here, among others, but I’ll go with the San Francisco Giants.
They ranked in the top 10 in ground-ball percentage by starting pitchers last season, and pairing Valdez with Logan Webb atop their rotation would give them an effective one-two punch as they try to catch up in the NL West.
CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson – November 11, 2025
The San Francisco Giants are trying to return to the playoffs and have money to spend. I like Valdez in that ballpark and along with Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, the Giants would have the chance at three veteran frontline starters in front of Landen Roupp and possibly Trevor McDonald or Kai-Wei Teng.
CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder – November 11, 2025
Valdez, 31, just put the finishing touches on a 13-11 season with the Astros that included a 3.66 ERA and 187 strikeouts over 192 innings pitched (career-high 31 starts).
The 2022 World Series champion holds a career record of 81-52 and an impressive 3.36 ERA to go along with 1,053 strikeouts and a 1.204 WHIP.
Many around baseball predict Valdez to ink a contract in the neighborhood of $170-200 million.
If the San Francisco Giants want to bolster a top-heavy rotation that includes Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and question marks after, adding a star like Valdez could be exactly the type of move that team president Buster Posey is looking to make.

The San Francisco Giants enter the offseason in need of another splash, and none this year will be larger than free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker.
Tucker, 28, is the top free agent available this offseason and will be in the market for a new contract that is expected to start above the $400 million range.
While there will be more aggressive suitors for Tucker in free agency, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale views San Francisco as a team that could make a push for the star corner outfielder this winter.
Kyle Tucker, a native of Tampa, will sign with the Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, or Los Angeles Dodgers, GMs predict.
The San Francisco Giants are a darkhorse, but considering they still owe Rafael Devers $250 million, are in the second year of a seven-year, $182 million contract with Willy Adames and the second of a six-year, $151 million extension with Matt Chapman, there’s only so many nine-figure contracts the Giants can seemingly afford.
They are paying $137 million alone to their top six players next year: Devers, Chapman, Adames, Robbie Ray, Logan Webb and Jung Hoo Lee. And don’t forget they are paying a record $10.5 million in salaries for a manager in 2026 – $4 million to fired Bob Melvin, $3.5 million to new manager Tony Vitello and $3 million to Tennessee for Vitello’s buyout.
