Sacramento County approves $341M budget for housing solutions; Supervisors also approve conversion of office building into apartments
MAPS FOR PROP 50, THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY AGENCY THAT HELPS LOW INCOME FAMILIES GET INTO HOUSING WILL HAVE A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET NEXT YEAR. THE SACRAMENTO HOUSING AND REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY WAS CREATED TO WORK WITH THE CITY TO FIND HOUSING SOLUTIONS. COUNTY SUPERVISORS APPROVED THEIR $341 MILLION BUDGET THIS WEEK. MOST OF THAT MONEY WILL COME FROM FEDERAL PROGRAMS AND THE REST, AS YOU CAN SEE THERE IS FROM CITY AND COUNTY PROGRAMS. THE MAJORITY OF THAT MONEY WILL HELP FAMILIES AFFORD THEIR RENTAL PAYMENTS. THE AGENCY ALSO PLANS TO FOCUS ON THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY THIS YEAR, ADVOCATING FOR NATIONAL HOUSING ORGANIZATIONS AND CREATING A TEN YEAR PLAN FOR PUBLIC HOUSING SUSTAINABILITY. THE SUPERVISORS ALSO ASKED IF THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN IS IMPACTING THAT AGENCY. THE PROGRAM’S DIRECTOR BELIEVES THAT THEY DO HAVE THE FUNDING FOR HOUSING VOUCHERS FOR THIS MONTH, AND THEY ARE STILL EXPECTED TO RECEIVE THEIR FUNDING FOR NEXT MONTH. WELL, THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ALSO APPROVING CONVERTING A VACANT OFFICE BUILDING INTO APARTMENTS. THE DEVELOPERS WANT TO CONVERT THE BUILDING ON ENGLE ROAD EAST OF GIBBONS PARKWAY, INTO A 16 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING. IT’S IN THE CARMICHAEL AREA, AND THE NEW COMPLEX WOULD INVOLVE MUCH OF THE BUILDING’S INTERIOR, AS WELL AS THE LANDSCAPING AROUND IT BEING TAKEN OUT. THE DEVELOPER SAYS THE PROJECT WOULD KEEP OUT HOMELESS SQUATTERS AND IMPROVE THE NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT SOME OF THOSE LIVING NEAR THE SITE SAY IT’S NOT THE RIGHT FIT. VACANT OFFICES ARE A PRETTY BIG PROBLEM, AND WE’RE TRYING TO MITIGATE THE RISK THAT THE HOMELESS HAVE STARTED TO, YOU KNOW, DUE TO THESE PROPERTIES, IT STILL DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH PARKING. Sacramento County supervisors have approved a $341 million budget for the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency to help low-income families with housing solutions.The agency was created to work with the city to find housing solutions. Most of the money will come from federal programs, with the rest from city and county programs. The majority of that money will help families afford their rental payments. The Board of Supervisors also approved converting a vacant office building into apartments.
