The Bakersfield Police Department reported the arrest Tuesday of a second person who reportedly fled from officers the night of Oct. 14 shortly before a fatal officer-involved shooting in south Bakersfield.

The agency said in a news release Wednesday the unidentified 16-year-old surrendered to police. It noted he was arrested on a warrant for weapons charges.

A release the agency issued last Thursday said officers tried to contact two people, both males, at about 9:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of Pacheco Road.

It said the pair fled and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The department has not offered details on what prompted the shooting.

One of the two people was hit by gunfire and died despite receiving medical care, the release said. The Kern County coroner’s office later identified him as Daniel James Ruiz, a 23-year-old Bakersfield resident.
