Royal Oak Seeks Resident and Stakeholder Input in Zoning Update Process

(City of Royal Oak, Oct. 21, 2026)

Royal Oak, MI – The City of Royal Oak Planning Division is inviting residents, businesses and other community stakeholders to share input as we work on a comprehensive zoning ordinance update. A dedicated website, bit.ly/RO-ZO, was created as a central hub for information on the zoning ordinance update process, including interactive maps, timelines, meeting materials and ordinance drafts.

Community members are encouraged to share their perspective to help shape the rules that will guide how Royal Oak evolves. A survey is available at bit.ly/RO-ZO through Monday, Nov. 9. It should take about 10 minutes to complete and is anonymous.

“We want to hear from people that reference the zoning ordinance,” said City of Royal Oak Director of Planning Joseph Murphy. “Understanding their experience will help the city craft a code that functions not only as a regulatory document, but also a practical guide for residents, applicants, staff and decision-makers.”

The zoning ordinance is the set of rules that guides how properties across the city can be used or developed. Following the approval of a new Master Plan last year, it was determined that the structure of the current zoning ordinance and some of its contents do not align with the vision laid out in the Master Plan. It was also determined that the current ordinance does not align with city initiatives, recent development activity or best practices. The main purpose of this project is to make the ordinance clearer, more objective, better organized and easier to navigate. Community members can explore the city’s current zoning districts in a new interactive map available on the city’s website at romi.gov/303/Zoning-District-Maps.

For more information and to take the survey, visit bit.ly/RO-ZO. If you prefer a physical copy of the survey, please contact the city’s planning division at 248-246-3280.
