A 35-year-old man who was shot to death over the weekend just steps from the Ocean Beach Pier has been identified by San Diego police.
The shooting happened just after midnight Saturday in the 5000 block of Niagara Avenue, according to police, who arrived to find Ismael Ramirez, a San Diego resident, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
There’s a sense of unease tonight for some people in Ocean Beach as police search for a group of people wanted in connection with a deadly shooting. NBC 7’s Jeanette Quezada has details on what happened and the suspects that police believe crashed into a car as they made their escape.
On Saturday, investigators announced that they were searching for a group of people who may be connected with the deadly shooting.
At least two men and two women, all between the ages of 25-30, were hanging out in the area of the pier parking lot for a period of time before walking south to the 5100 block of Narragansett Avenue, according to police.
After the shots, the group returned to the pier parking lot, got into two vehicles and drove away east on Newport Avenue, OB’s main drag. The vehicles were a white sedan and blue or gray SUV. One of the vehicles may have struck another car as it left the area, police said.
“Whenever we came in — about midnight, 1 o’clock in the morning — there was a lot of really loud sirens, a lot of emergency vehicles,” said Bethany Howard, whose family are visiting from Arizona. “This whole area was and stayed taped off for a long time.”
Howard and her family were in town to vacation in Ocean Beach near the pier.
“It’s scary to not know, you know, where they went,” Howard told NBC 7 over the weekend. “You know: Who are you walking past when you’re out here? You see kids playing and you wonder, ‘Who are the people I’m walking by?’ ”
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is being urged to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
