Rain won’t fall in as many places Thursday, but a few isolated cells could produce lightning, heavy rain and small hail

Heather Waldman

Thursday is expected to be another busy day for Northern California as another line of showers pushes into the region.

Moderate to heavy rain arrived in areas such as Modesto, and the rain will likely hold throughout the morning commute. Showers will be scattered throughout the Foothills and Sierra.

Because of this, a Weather Impact Day has been added for Thursday in the Valley, Foothills and Sierra. Stronger cells could produce heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds.

Timing

By Thursday morning, the focus for light rain will be on the west side of the Valley and coastal areas. There will also be some showers in the Sierra with light snow above 8,000 feet.

More potent downpours and a few thunderstorms will bubble up in the afternoon. Thunderstorms are possible across the Valley, Foothills and Sierra.

A few showers will linger early Friday morning in the Sierra, but all of Northern California will be dry and sunny by midday.

Impacts

Anyone with outdoor plans or anyone who needs to drive Thursday evening should be prepared for brief bursts of heavy rain. Remember to use headlights when windshield wipers are on even if there’s daylight.

While chain controls are not part of the equation for the Tahoe summits this week, heavy rain and hail could make the freeways slick, and visibility could be reduced significantly.

Ebbetts, Monitor, Sonora and Tioga passes are temporarily closed. Caltrans will reopen them once precipitation stops on Friday.

Looking ahead

Dry weather returns Friday with a gusty north breeze on the west side of the Valley.

The weekend will have lighter winds, seasonably cool temperatures and a mix of clouds and sun.

The next likely chance for rain in California may come in the last couple of days of October or the first couple of days of November.

California’s next likely chance for rain could come during the last couple of days of October or the first couple of days of November. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center expects an increased chance for wetter than normal weather during that time.
