NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The two coasts of the United States are now joined.
On Thursday, the Charleston International Airport and United Airlines announced a new nonstop flight from the Holy City to San Francisco starting March 28, 2027.
“We’re thrilled to expand our service in Charleston with new nonstop seasonal service to San Francisco next spring,” said Mark Weithofer, the managing director of domestic network planning at United.
“This provides the community with convenient cross-country service to the West Coast and builds on United’s existing service between Charleston and our hubs in Chicago, Newark, Washington Dulles, Denver and Houston.”
Flights will operate four times weekly on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. The plane taking Lowcountry travelers to San Francisco International Airport and California travelers to the Charleston International Airport will be a Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 MAX 8.
Travel officials believe the new route underscores the strength and desirability of the Charleston market.
Additionally, it will expand travel options for Charleston-area residents and businesses, providing a direct link to the Bay Area – a major center for technology, business, tourism and innovation – as well as connections to destinations across the West Coast, Asia and the Pacific via United’s San Francisco hub, airport officials said.
“Nonstop service to San Francisco is an exciting addition for Charleston International Airport and the entire Lowcountry,” said Elliott Summey, the president and chief executive officer of Charleston International Airport.
“As our region continues to grow, so does the demand for convenient access to major markets across the country and around the world. This new transcontinental route strengthens our connection to the West Coast, supports our business and tourism communities, and gives travelers more choices when flying from their hometown airport.”
