Just in time for Halloween, CIFF invites you (DARES you!) to get wonderfully, memorably, scared, as Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror/thriller masterpiece “Psycho” comes to the big screen on Wednesday, October 28 at Coronado’s Village Theatre. Tickets are $15, and are available now at coronadofilmfest.com

Doors open at 6:15 with complimentary refreshments in the Lobby Bar, followed at 6:45 by welcome remarks, film intro, and the feature film.

Widely considered one of Hitchcock’s best films and “the mother of the modern slasher and psychological thriller genre,” it is also arguably his most famous and influential work. The unforgettable shower scene remains today, sixty-six years later, one of the most discussed, analyzed and respected scenes in the history of filmmaking. The screeching violin score by composer Bernard Herrman so pleased director Hitchcock that he doubled Hermann’s salary, stating afterwards in an interview that 33% of the effect of “Psycho” was due to the music.

The film stars Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh in the leading roles, roles of which they were both very proud and which would define these two actors for the rest of their lives. It was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Director for Hitchcock, Best Supporting Actress for Janet Leigh, Best Cinematography for John L. Russell, and Best Art Direction for Robert Clatworthy and Joseph Hurley. The fact that Anthony Perkins was not nominated for his fearless portrayal of Norman Bates was considered by many to be an egregious oversight.

When the cast and crew began work on the first day of shooting, Hitchcock made them all raise their right hands and solemnly swear that they would not divulge one word of the story.

And next month, a complete change of pace! Come back on Wednesday, November 25 for the 1989 delight, “When Harry Met Sally,” starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. The perfect Night-Before-Thanksgiving movie. Bring the family and get tickets now at coronadofilmfest.com.
