Ensuring that no Prop 28 funds will be returned to the state

Sacramento, CA – Sacramento City Unified is proud to prioritize arts education for our students, investing every penny of the $6.27 million allocation from Prop 28 funds into expanding our Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) programs. Our investment includes adding 32 full-time arts positions and providing arts education to an additional 13,500 students across 60 of our school sites in all grade levels. We have also been able to partner with local artists to provide more than 200 residencies in our schools.

The Sacramento City Unified VAPA Master Plan illuminates how arts education in the district is key to cultivating creative, well-rounded, empathetic, and resilient students.

“We thank the voters for seeing the importance of the arts in schools and for passing Prop 28,” said Cancy McArn, superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District. “The Board of Education has been clear that our mission is to serve and support the whole student. Providing a robust arts education program is one of the many ways we accomplish that.”

Upon discovering an error in how the district originally reported this spending, Sacramento City Unified amended its Prop 28 funding report to the California Department of Education. The corrected expenditures report confirms that the district spent the full allocation from the state to support arts education for students and does not need to return any unspent funds. Additionally, the district has taken action to understand the cause of the reporting error so it is not repeated in the future.
