Two suspects were arrested in connection with the search for a historic horse statue that was stolen last month, according to Sacramento police.

The life-sized bronze statue depicted Ben Ali, a racehorse with deep ties to Sacramento history. Ben Ali trained at Rancho Del Paso in Sacramento County before winning the Kentucky Derby in 1886, becoming the first California-bred horse to win the race.

On Sept. 31, the statue was reported stolen from its place along Del Paso Boulevard near the Sacramento Youth Center.

The Sacramento Police Department announced the arrests Wednesday but said the landmark still has not been found.

“The arrest of these two suspects shows our resolve to safeguard North Sacramento’s heritage and guarantee accountability for those who seek to harm our community landmarks,” said Sacramento City Councilmember Roger Dickinson in a statement.
