A suspect was hospitalized after being shot by law enforcement officials following a chase that ended in the Arden-Arcade area on Thursday, officials said.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened on Fulton Avenue near Michelle Drive. The incident began shortly before noon, when California Highway Patrol officers reported encountering a person armed with a knife during a traffic violation, according to the sheriff’s office.
The person got back into a vehicle and fled. The Citrus Heights Police Department said two officers were returning to the city after transporting an individual to the Downtown Sacramento jail when they spotted a CHP officer pursuing a truck and decided to join the chase, which the sheriff’s office said ended after the driver exited onto Fulton Avenue.
The suspect got out of the vehicle armed with a knife and began pacing in front of it, authorities said. According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy fired a less-lethal round as the suspect ran toward law enforcement officials.
Moments later, two Citrus Heights police officers fired gunshots at the suspect, striking him, the sheriff’s office said. The suspect was taken to a hospital and was stable at last check.
No law enforcement officials were injured.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the shooting, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review.
The suspect’s wife was located at the scene, authorities noted.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
Fulton Avenue is expected to be closed between Echo Way and Edison Avenue for several hours. Initially, the sheriff’s office said that Watt Avenue was closed, before updating to reflect that the closure was on Fulton Avenue.
