An incredible group of disabled artists were honored Thursday at Los Angeles City Hall.

Dozens gathered for the 19th Annual Disability Art Exhibition, which honored artists for their work highlighting personal connections to the natural world through art.

“Oh gosh, I’m going to get emotional talking about it because I think it’s so heartwarming,” said Akiko Tagawa, president of the LA City Commission on Disability.

“The goal is inclusion, the goal is empowering our youth and our artists with disabilities, and to be able to highlight it in this beautiful building, city hall, you know, the center of what city business is all about, is just tremendous.”

Five winners of this year’s KASEC Dream Art Contest were among the honorees.

The contest gives people with developmental disabilities the chance to explore their creativity and express unique perspectives.

“It’s pretty special to me, because like I said, I didn’t know about it, so it’s pretty nice to have it displayed here so people can see,” artist and honoree Aaron Shim said.

The Korean American Special Education Center has sponsored the contest since 2018.

“When they see the paintings, I hope they can notice all the different style of colors, and styles, and because it makes the art more beautiful,” KASEC Executive Director Rosa Chang said.

“And in the same way, I think the diverse people can come together and make the community more beautiful and richer.”
