Faster Answers for California Farmers? That’s the Goal of a New UC Lab
When a California farmer runs into a problem in the field, getting answers quickly can make all the difference.
And that’s exactly what University of California researchers are hoping to improve with a new laboratory complex planned for Fresno County.
The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources has received nearly one-point-five million dollars in federal funding, which UC ANR will match, to establish the facility at its West Side Research and Extension Center in Five Points.
According to a UC ANR news release, the facility will allow scientists to analyze soil, water, plant and pest samples right on site, rather than shipping them to distant laboratories.
That’s expected to reduce costs, shorten turnaround times and help researchers develop solutions for growers more efficiently.
The lab will support research into some of California agriculture’s biggest challenges, including water scarcity, soil quality, pests and plant diseases.
It will also provide space for hands-on training and collaboration among researchers, students and agricultural professionals.
The goal is to make agricultural research more efficient and help California growers better address challenges in the field.
