A demonstration is scheduled Saturday evening at Los Alamitos Race Course, where 13 racehorses have died in racing or training injuries this year.
The most recent death occurred in the second race on Saturday, Oct. 17. The official race chart says the 2-year-old filly Soo Bronx “was bumped early, bad step 5/16, pulled up, equine ambulanced.”
She is the 13th horse to die from injuries suffered at the track in 2026, with 12 racing deaths and one training death. Four of those deaths have occurred in October.
The track experienced 19 racing and training deaths in 2025, according to California Horse Racing Board data.
Activists with the Los Angeles Animal Defense League and Orange County Animal Liberation will gather in front the Cypress track from 6 to 8 p.m. to protest the high number of horse deaths, but also the fact that the track is “offering abusive pony rides at their annual Halloween carnival,” according to organizers.
The track is holding its annual Los Alamitos Race Course Halloween Carnival on Saturday night. Along with the pony rides, the event includes more than 25 games for children, and a Halloween costume contest in which cash prizes are awarded across seven age divisions throughout the night.
Admission is $3 for adults, with children 17 and under getting in free.
Los Alamitos officials did not respond to a request for comment about the protest.
