All lanes of northbound Interstate 15 were shut down early Monday after a fatal crash involving five vehicles, officials said. The closure caused a major traffic backup.

The crash was reported around 3:35 a.m. on I-15 at Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Motorists initially reported two vehicles were involved in a crash but then other vehicles collided with the cars, according to a California Highway Patrol online log.

CHP officers said one person was killed. No information about the person who died was immediately available.

Vehicles were being diverted to westbound and eastbound state Route 52, CHP Officer Michael Meza said. Traffic was backed up before Interstate 8 all the way to SR-52, he said.

He said it was unclear when the lanes would reopen.
