BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — CALM Zoo announced that their acorn woodpecker, Ruby, has died.

CALM said Ruby came to CALM Zoo 15 years ago as an adult through Valley Wildlife Care in the San Fernando Valley.

“Although we don’t know her exact age, Ruby lived beyond her expected life expectancy, a testament to the incredible care, dedication, and attention she received from her animal keepers and veterinary team. She spent many years here becoming a familiar and much-loved part of our zoo family.”

Ruby was located near the deer habitat. CALM Zoo said she was a lively, spirited, and vocal bird, and you could often hear her before you spotted her.

CALM said Ruby’s passing was unexpected, as she had not been showing signs of illness or slowing down.

In a social media post, it said, “While we will deeply miss seeing and hearing her around the zoo, we are grateful for the many years we were able to care for her and share her with our community. Thank you for being such a special part of CALM Zoo, Ruby. You will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.”
