Doja Cat was worth the wait.
The hip-hop/pop star’s concert on Sunday night (Oct. 25) at Chase Center in San Francisco, which was pushed back six days due to a scheduling conflict with the Golden State Valkyries Finals game 3, was a thrilling spectacle filled with plenty of intriguing theatrics, great musicianship, top-notch vocals and — of course — plenty of sensuality and sexuality.
This is Doja Cat, after all.
Taking the stage right around 8:45 p.m., following an opening set by Atlanta hip-hop star Latto (best known for the hit “Big Energy”), Doja Cat delighted a packed Chase Center of 10,000-plus fans as she performed 32 songs over the course of her fast-paced two hour set.
The 31-year-old Los Angeles native, hailed by millions as “The Queen of Pop-Rap,” opened the show with “Cards” — which is also the track that kickstarts her latest album, 2025’s “Vie” — and then stuck with the new material for “AAAHH MEN.” In all, she’d devote about a third of the setlist on this Tour Ma Vie World Tour stop to the new album, a highly entertaining ’80s-pop-inspired outing that plays down Doja’s regular brand of 21st century hip-hop while pumping up the retro disco, funk and dance-pop grooves.
Yet, the more things change, the more they stay the same, right? And despite this change/detour in musical direction, it’s Doja’s mind-blowing rapping abilities that really stood tall in the mix, as she showcased her deft wordplay on such past triumphs as “Agora Hills” (from 2023’s “Scarlet”) and “Women” (from 2021’s “Planet Her”). She’s simply one of the best MCs in the business — male or female — over the past eight or so years.
The star worked a two-story stage in front of an funk-tastic live band that included a three-piece horn section. There was also a (Doja) catwalk that extended out into the audience. The vocalist was joined by several dancers, who contributed to the steady stream of erotically charged theatrics taking place— lots of grinding, bumping, rubbing, etc. to match the lyrical themes of the night.
And the crowd was definitely buying into the sexual energy, reserving some of its loudest cheers of the night for when Doja would stop the music and turn away from the crowd, allowing the cameras to project closeups of her backside onto the huge overhead screens.
Her wardrobe choice was also a huge talking point, as the singer — who is famed for her revealing and daring outfits — wore a tiger-print leotard that went from ankles to just above her belly. She then added a leopard-print G-string (worn over the leotard) and matching micro-brasserie and belt. (Question to readers: Is it a fashion faux pas to mix big-cat prints in the same outfit? I don’t know how these things work. Feel free to ping me and let me know.)
The crowd also dressed to impress, getting an early start on Halloween with some wild costumes and outfits as well as plenty of other provocative garb. It wasn’t quite as over-the-top as when Doja Cat last performed at Chase Center — which actually happened on Halloween night 2023 — but San Francisco definitely still showed up ready to party hardy.
The other thing that has changed since that Halloween show, which served as the kickoff to the Scarlet Tour, is that Doja Cat has gotten better in so many ways. And that even seemed true in comparison to Doja’s more recent outing in San Francisco, as one of the headliners of the 2025 Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park.
Her singing voice has grown stronger and more versatile, easily conveying the Madonna-like ’80s-pop-music vibe that the “Vie” material calls for. She’s an even more commanding presence on the concert stage, ruling over the crowd with a mix of sheer charisma, sensuality and attitude. And she’s handling all the key details quite nicely — from properly pacing the show and staying firmly in character during the varying theatrical elements to setting the tone for everyone else on the stage.
In all, she’s looks like someone who has now fully grown into the role of arena-headliner — and may be on her way to stadium headliner.
Plus, the show just kept getting better as it went on, with Doja Cat managing to shift into an even higher gear about midway through the night with a powerful version of the “Scarlet” favorite “Paint the Town Red.” She’d bring Latto back to the stage so that the two women could re-team up for “Okayyy,” the recent single featuring both vocalists, and then went into a fiery version of the 2019 “Hot Pink” number “Streets” that featured plenty of pyrotechnics as well as a Slash-style guitar outro.
She then made the rare misstep with “Wet Vagina,” falling out of her lyrical flow and asking for a do-over of this “Scarlet” offering.
“Run that (expletive) back,” she demanded.
The theatrical effects amped up as we approached the finish line — with fireworks generously being shot off like the crew really didn’t want to pack them up and bring them along to the next tour stop in San Diego. And there were enough pyro effects happening during the likes of “Tia Tamera” — from the 2019 debut “Amala” — to impress a Rammstein fan.
“San Francisco, i am only going to tell you this once,” Doja Cat warned the fans as the show neared its final moments. “Jump!”
Jump they did, matching Doja Cat’s energy and helping to fuel the concert toward its close with “Boss Bitch,” “Stranger,” “One More Time” and other favorites.
