Nijzel DotsonSACRAMENTO, Calif. —

A woman was killed, and a 4-year-old child was hurt after being struck by a vehicle on Sunday near a soccer field.

The Sacramento Police Department said officers responded to a parking lot in the 500 block of Las Palmas Avenue around 3:15 p.m.

The crash happened near an area where community members say families often gather for weekend sports games.

A witness said a driver was parking and seemed to accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, striking the woman and child.

The woman was taken to a hospital with major injuries and the child with minor injuries. The woman was pronounced dead, despite lifesaving measures, police said.

Police said the driver involved in the crash remained on scene and investigators do not believe that alcohol or drugs are a factor. The crash is under investigation.

On Monday, the Sacramento County coroner identified the woman as 48-year-old Maria Araceli Pena, of Sacramento.
