A woman was killed, and a 4-year-old child suffered minor injuries after they were struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of North Del Rio School Park in North Sacramento on Sunday afternoon. The park is next to Las Palmas Elementary School.
The crash happened shortly before 3:15 p.m., near a youth soccer game taking place at the park. The impact left an SUV on the field, while police and emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Zay, who lives nearby, said he noticed police vehicles heading into the park, where members of his family were playing in a soccer match.
“That’s one reason why we went over there was to check on them to see if it had to do with them, if they were injured or not,” Zay said.
His family members were unharmed, but when he arrived, he saw first responders attempting to save the woman.
“When I walked up, I had kinda seen about 4 or 5 cops, a couple EMS, and they were above the woman trying to resuscitate her for 20-30 minutes,” Zay said.
The woman was identified in the report as Maria Pena; she was 48 years old.
According to Zay, the driver believed the vehicle was in drive instead of reverse and pressed the accelerator, causing it to move backward and strike the woman and child.
That account has not been confirmed by investigators with the Sacramento Police Department in the information provided.
Zay said family members at the scene were trying to comfort the woman’s daughter, who was also hit.
“They were just trying to be comforting to the daughter because she was there crying a lot; she was in a lot of pain,” Zay said.
Children who had been playing soccer also came over and witnessed the aftermath, according to Zay.
“I know it was for the children; that was a real different type of experience for them because they had just seen a grown woman pass in front of their eyes and especially for the son, the son he got walked over there,” Zay said.
Zay told ABC10 the woman’s son was among the players on the field.
The scene has since been cleared, and a small memorial has been placed at North Del Rio School Park.
