Sugar Coated Cupcakes in Sacramento is seeking donations after toys meant for local children were stolen from its storage unit
Sugar Coated Cupcakes, a bakery in Sacramento’s Tahoe Park neighborhood, is asking for community support after toys intended for local children were stolen from its storage unit last week.
“We have over 400 flavors of cupcake,” said LaQueanya Henry, the bakery’s owner. “We’re constantly creating, just constantly creating. And I just get so much inspiration from everything.”
Henry’s efforts go beyond baking. Her Sugar Coated Toy Shop collaborates with under-resourced schools and social workers overseeing Title I schools to provide toys and gifts for families of children who attend those schools.
“What we do is work with under-resourced schools within Sac Unified school districts, specifically with the social workers overseeing those Title I schools. And we provide toys and gifts for the families of children that attend those schools,” Henry said.
Throughout the year, Henry purchases toys and accepts donations from the community to prepare for the big Christmas event. However, the Elk Grove storage unit where she keeps the toys was broken into last week.
“We are in such tough times. And so, I get it. You know, everyone has trials and tribulations, but this is the one thing that I think that everyone can agree that when you take anything from a child,” Henry said. “You know, they didn’t really just take from me. Even though they physically took from me per se, but they took from children, and you just don’t do things to children.”
The last photo Henry has of the packed storage unit is from July, and so she is unsure of the exact number of toys lost, but said it’s a lot. Despite the setback, she remains determined to ensure no child wakes up on Christmas morning without a gift.
“We’re going to get those toys back. I believe in the community as well as my shopping habits,” Henry said. “We consistently hear year over year that this is the only gift that their children will be given or will receive for Christmas.”
Sugar Coated Cupcakes is accepting toy donations at the bakery and through its website to help replace the stolen items.
Elk Grove Police confirmed they took a report of the burglary at the storage unit in the 2300 block of Maritime.
