FRESNO, Calif (KSEE/KGPE) – As rain swept across the Central Valley this week, Fresno City officials say their crews were ready thanks to proactive storm preparation completed well before the first drops fell.
Public Works Director Scott Mozier says the city began clearing storm drains and checking pump systems weeks in advance, helping to prevent widespread flooding and damage.
“The city team was ready and engaged in things like clearing drains weeks in advance,” said Mozier. “We made sure pumps were working… we were well prepared for the event.”
So far, the city has received fewer than 20 calls related to the storm. Most of those were for minor, localized street flooding caused by clogged drains.
“It’s been somewhat busy. We’ve had less than 20 calls… mostly just some smaller localized flooding on streets, really coming from clogged drains,” Mozier explained.
One tree was reported down ahead of the storm, but officials say the wind remained calm throughout the worst of the weather, helping to prevent further damage.
“So thankfully today you can see the wind is very calm, which generally means the trees do well,” Mozier said.
City leaders are encouraging residents to be proactive during future storms by reporting blocked drains, potholes, or downed trees.
“If there’s a downed tree, pothole, or localized flooding, residents can call 311 or use the FresGO app on their smartphone,” said Mozier.
Even small debris—like pine needles or a discarded soda cup—can block a drain and lead to street flooding.
Mozier also noted that Fresno benefits from a partnership with the Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District and the Fresno Irrigation District, which helps capture stormwater and recharge groundwater levels.
“Thankfully, we’re early in the season… we’re able to capture that storm water. It goes into the flood control basins and creates a benefit that actually recharges our groundwater,” he said.
For residents who live in unincorporated “county islands” between city and county land, Mozier says either agency can help depending on the location.
“Within the county islands, definitely contacting the county is appropriate. If it’s a shared street… definitely the city can field those calls,” he said.
To report a storm-related issue, such as a downed tree or blocked storm drain, you can call 311 or download the free FresGO app on your smartphone.
