Playing together for the last time in high school, record-setting quarterback-receiver duo of Azul Trujillo and Jessica Manriquez led the Vincent Memorial High School to its second consecutive CIF San Diego Section title.

Trujillo, a junior, completed 21 of 27 passes for 288 yards and six TDs and Manriquez, a senior, pulled down 11 of those passes for 131 yards and three TDs. As a result, the 12th-seeded Scots captured the Division 2 championship with a 38-7 victory over third-seeded Escondido Charter on Saturday afternoon at Olympian High School.

Not bad for a team that started the season 0-6.

“I’m so proud we made it this far after the way things started,” said Trujillo. “I’m just so excited for our whole team.”

“We got everything we worked so hard for even after such a rocky start,” said Manriquez, who also added an interception on defense. “Still, I think Azul and I will have a chance to play together again in college; that’s the plan.”

The Scots (15-8) racked up a 26-6 halftime lead and never looked back.

Junior Ananti Medina led the offense for Escondido Charter (12-9), pulling down eight passes from quarterback Riley Graff for 94 yards and a TD.

Division 1

Cathedral Catholic 14, Scripps Ranch 13: Mila Petitte took a pitch on an option play from quarterback Sabrina Jutronich with 4:48 remaining and raced 36 yards up the sideline to score the tying touchdown. The extra-point pass from Jutronich to Emma Weeks gave the top-seeded Dons (16-7) a one-point victory and the San Diego Section Division 1 title.

“I was really scared; if I didn’t catch it or they caught me, we wouldn’t win,” said Petitte. “I caught it, did a little juke and took off.”

“We were running out of time and I knew we had to score,” said Jutronich. “I told her on that option play just to stay with me and look for the pitch.”

It was the third time the two teams played this year. Scripps Ranch won the first game 25-12 on Sept. 1, with Cathedral Catholic winning 31-13 a month ago.

“They got us and then we got them,” said Dons coach Ryan Wiegand. “I’m an old baseball guy and we always did things in three-game series and the third game is always the toughest.”

Scripps Ranch (15-9), the No. 2 seed, led 13-7 at the half behind a pair of TD passes from sophomore quarterback Ashley Koba to junior playmaker Malia Kollmeyer.

Division 3

Santa Fe Christian 20, Patrick Henry 6: Santa Fe Christian intercepted five passes on the way to a two-touchdown win in the Division 3 title game.

SFC was ahead 6-0 when its defense turned in its first big play of the afternoon. Ari Dorn came down with an interception to set up an instant goal-to-go opportunity for the Eagles’ offense. Less than a minute later, Winslow Lenihan connected with Therese Esmay on an 11-yard score to stretch the Santa Fe Christian lead to 13-0.

Later in the third quarter and holding a 13-6 lead, the Eagles’ secondary struck again. Maya Hamrick went airborne to intercept a deep Henry pass. The Eagles then put the game on ice, with Lenihan hitting Dorn in stride for a 35-yard score.

“I’m thinking to myself, just catch the ball,” Dorn said. “It was going through my mind nonstop.”

Division 4

Imperial 31, Oceanside 0: Imperial wrapped up its run to a section title behind a five-touchdown day from quarterback Julissa Romo.

In four playoff wins, the Tigers outscored their opponents by a total score of 175-19.

“Our girls just meshed at the right time,” Imperial coach Victor Cruz said.

The Imperial offense opened scoring with a hook-and-ladder play on fourth down that led to a 27-yard touchdown by Addison Clark. The play, called “Pickes,” is a player favorite.

Imperial tacked on 18 second-half points to put the game away, with Romo throwing three second-half touchdown passes.

“I know I can trust all my girls,” Romo said. “Towards the middle of this year, I think we all really came together and took on a winning mindset.”
